Unburnable Carbon: are the World’s Financial Markets Carrying a Carbon Bubble? A Decade on
A decade on from Carbon Tracker’s inaugural report Unburnable Carbon: Are the World’s Financial Markets Carrying a Carbon Bubble? our Oil, Gas & Mining team revisits the analysis, looking at risks for both climate and transition risks.

In 2011, we found about 80% of declared reserves owned by listed companies were at risk of stranding if the world should stay below 2C temperature rise. Since then, annual emissions and fossil fuel reserves with listed ownership have increased while the world’s ambition level has strengthened to not exceed 1.5˚C temperature rise.

Despite the global distribution of oil, gas and coal mining production, the financing of these companies is concentrated in a small number of financial centres and stock exchanges. This event will discuss the latest analysis with a panel of industry experts and explore the climate impacts of companies listed in these financial centres and the risks that investors are exposed to, especially those in passive funds; what regulatory bodies can and should do; and ultimately look at why we continue to finance the fossil fuel industry.

This event will be held in person in London with a livestream for global audiences. If you would like to attend in person please contact hello@carbontracker.org.
